A Letter from Yolanda Chapa, Superintendent of Schools

Dear SRISD Parents and Community,

We are aware of the devastating incident that happened in our community and tragically took a young man’s life last week. Santa Rosa ISD is working in conjunction with the Texas Rangers and local law enforcement to ensure the safety our students, staff, and the Santa Rosa community. Due to safety concerns from students and parents, today our attendance rate was better than yesterday, but it remains at a low point for our district.

Our attendance for today, January 31, 2023, is as follows:

Santa Rosa High School: 219 present from 289 enrolled = 76%

Jo Nelson Middle School: 170 present from 231 enrolled = 74%

Elma E. Barrera Elementary: 323 present from 421 enrolled = 77%

We understand each and every parent’s concerns regarding the situation, however we are enforcing safety measures to ensure the safety of our students and staff. Every day a student is absent is a lost opportunity for learning.

Although there is no direct threat to our schools, SRISD will take precautionary measures this school week to ensure the safety of our students including additional law enforcement units patrolling all of our campuses and district police routinely monitoring hallways and front entrance doors where students, staff, and visitors come in. On this note, students at the secondary campuses will not be allowed to wear hoodies until further notice.

SRISD Administration and District Police continuously evaluate and develop safety procedures based on the needs of our district to ensure the safety of our students and staff. If you or your students need support dealing with this unfortunate loss, please reach out to our school counselors for assistance. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the family, know that we are with you during these difficult times.

We want to assure students, parents, and staff that school safety is our top priority, and we want to provide a safe and secure environment for all who attend, visit, and work in our schools.
